About:

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2014) – The LIU Post men’s basketball team was among the countless organizations that lended a hand during the 13th-annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk on Sunday. An estimated 25,000 participated in the event, which was started as a tribute to a firefighter who lost his life on Sept. 11, 2001.

“Everyone walked away with a sense of pride in helping such a great cause,” said Head Coach Erik Smiles. “For our student-athletes to see West Point cadets running along with Wounded Warriors and firefighters in full gear for this great cause is extremely special and motivational.”

The five-kilometer course follows the run of Stephen Siller. Siller ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel on his way to the World Trade Center to aid in the rescue efforts. Tragically, Siller lost his life on that day. A foundation was created in his name, remembering the life and legacy of Siller and all the firefighters who lost their lives in the attacks, as well as to help wounded military personnel return home to their lives.

The Pioneers stood in support of the runners, and Smiles added that the event served as a point of education and emphasis for members of the team.

“We have a lot of guys on our team,” Smiles stated, “that are not from New York. For them to come down and see the site of such a tragedy and such an important moment in American history was truly something special and a great bonding experience for the team.”
